This post will be dedicated to a mean-spirited rant about Jenny McCarthy and her beliefs.
To those who are unfamiliar with the woman, Jenny McCarthy is a former Playboy Playmate of the Year who once dated Jim Carrey. This is the full extent of her accomplishments, but that's fine because she's also a doctor.
Yes, apparently after reaching the point where she no longer found her modelling career fulfilling Jenny toiled away for nearly a decade to earn her doctorate in medicine from Playboy Medical School. At least that's what I assume happened, since apparently people are willing to take her word over that of the entire global medical community on matters relating to autism and vaccinations.
It doesn't take a lot of research to figure out that Jenny is about as much of an authority on subjects related to medicine as Paula Deen is on any subject related to healthy eating. Jenny decided to get into the ol' medicine racket when she found out that her son had developed autism. Jenny, in her infinite wisdom, came to the conclusion that her son got autism because he had gotten vaccinated. Never mind the fact that there is absolutely no evidence to support this claim, and that the legitimate medical community (you know, the one with actual doctors) considers any allegations of ties between autism and vaccinations to be completely false. It would seem that logic behaves differently in Jenny McCarthy Land, and that anything can be true if you just believe hard enough.
If you stare at this picture long enough you'll get autism
Unfortunately for the rest of humanity, the line between Jenny McCarthy Land and Reality Land has become blurred and her unique interpretation of rational thought has spilled over onto the rest of us. Jenny decided to join like-minded thinkers in a campaign against vaccinations and the results have been pretty depressing. California recently had its worst outbreak of whooping cough in the last 50 years, coincidentally around the same time and in the same regions that the anti-vaccination campaign had become prevalent. Whooping cough is a bacterial disease that has been by and large cured in this part of the world thanks to the development of a vaccine. Because of Jenny and the the campaign against vaccinations this disease has made a recurrence and taken the lives of several infants. Society is literally regressing because of Jenny and this anti-vaccination campaign.
Most upsetting about all this however, is not the rhetoric of a deranged bimbo, but the willingness of so many people to accept medical advice from someone that is in no way qualified to give it. We can't solely place the blame on Jenny for this - she is just as ignorant as the people who listen to her. Some blame resides with all of us for giving her the means to spew her nonsense to the general population.
